In this article, we will be doing a full A-Z comparison between the YZF-R25 and CBR250RR to help you pick the right motorcycle! To keep the comparison fair, we will be using the Malaysia-spec 2020 Yamaha YZF-R25 and recently launched Honda CBR250RR. Yamaha YZF-R25 vs CBR250RR Hong Leong Yamaha Motor first launched the 250cc fully faired sports bike, the Yamaha YZF-R25 in Malaysia almost 2 years ago in January 2019. On the other hand, the Honda CBR250RR is a fairly new bike in Malaysia. In fact, the Honda CBR250RR was just launched a month ago in December 2020. Design Starting with the design, both the YZF-R25 and the CBR250RR are quarter-litre fully-faired sports bikes from Yamaha and Honda, therefore, they both get a full fairing design from the ground up. The Yamaha YZF-R25 follows the design of Yamaha’s R-range sports bikes similar to this, the CBR250RR follows the design of the bigger CBR bikes. That being said, the R25 gets sporty fairing all around and looks a lot like a downsized version of Yamaha’s bigger R-range of bikes. On the other hand, the CBR250RR follows the same trend, however, in comparison, the fairing design on the CBR250RR is much sharper than the R25. In the case of the riding position, as both these bikes fall under the sports bike category, therefore, they both accommodate the rider in a head-and-shoulders forward-leaning riding position. Speaking of seating, both the CBR250RR and R25 comes with a two-piece two-step sporty seat design. Upfront the YZF-R25 gets a twin led headlamp unit whereas the CBR250RR gets a bit more aggressive double-layered dual LED headlight. Moving to the rear, both the R25 and CBR250RR come with LED taillamp units enclosed within their narrow tail section. Chassis, Wheels and Tyres Underneath the YZF-R25 is built around Yamaha’s steel diamond frame and an aluminium swingarm. On the other hand, the CBR250RR is built around a steel truss frame and an aluminium swingarm as well. Note, unlike the delta box frame on the YZF-R15, the R25 features a steel diamond frame which is very similar in nature to CBR250RR’s steel truss structure. Suspension and brakes Moving on to the suspension, the Yamaha R25 features gold anodised telescopic inverted front fork and a pre-load adjustable mono-shock at the rear 7 settings. Meanwhile, the YZF-R25 does not get ABS in Malaysia and braking is done via a 2 piston calliper with 300mm disc up front and a single-piston calliper with 220mm disc at the rear. Engine Moving to the oily bits, the YZF-R25 is powered by a two-cylinder 249 cc, 8 Valve DOHC, liquid-cooled engine. Equivalent to Indonesia-spec CBR250RR SP Electronics Starting with the Honda CBR250RR, the model comes with LED lighting and a negative LCD panel with an in-built lap timer. Besides this, as mentioned earlier, the CBR250RR gets dual-channel ABS, throttle by wire, 3 riding modes comfort, sport, sport+ and quick shifter with assist and slipper clutch as standard in Malaysia. This is definitely something to look for when deciding between these two. Dimension wise the YZF-R25 measures 2,090mm x 720mm x 1,135mm LXWXH. Priced at RM 25,999 excluding road tax, insurance and registration fee, the CBR250RR is nearly RM 6,000 more expensive than the R25. So which bike is for you? Besides being a part of the quarter-litre sports bike quad, these two bikes are completely different in every other aspect. Whether it’s in terms of design or mechanical components, just like their elder siblings the YZF-R25 and CBR250RR both stand out on their own. This is one of the reasons why Yamaha’s R range and Honda’s CBR range of sports bike have been rivalling each other for years. The Honda CBR250RR is a well equipped quarter-litre sports bike because it packs an array of techs such as; dual-channel ABS, TWB, 3 riding modes and quick shifter with assist and slipper clutch. However, the competitor, the Malaysia-spec Yamaha YZF-R25 lacks all these features. Besides the features, pushing and 26Nm, the CBR250RR is also more powerful compared to the R25 pushing Nm. Moreover, the aesthetics of the bikes would also be something that you would want to consider. The YZF-R25 has been in the Malaysian market for some time, therefore although it still looks sporty in today’s standard, you might find the design of the new CBR250RR more appealing and attractive. However, all these come at a price, which in this case is the extra RM 6,000. That being said, at the end of the way, it all comes down to your own preference. If your budget is in the RM 20,000 mark and you don’t really mind the lack of tech, then the YZF-R25 is for you. The engine is easy to handle for urban riding, while it is just as comfortable on the circuit, with smooth output characteristics across the entire revrange. In addition, its Throttle-by-Wire TBW system and selectable 3-way engine mode settings allow the rider to tap into its linear power output at will, for a superior, solid acceleration. To make the engine very compact, many technologies were applied such as laid primary driver gears for the cam chain, oil pump on the right side that is integrated with the machine, the respiratory machine behind the cylinder, and put a water pump in the cylinder head as applied in RC213V. The width of the new 2-cylinder engine is almost identical to the one-cylinder engine in the same capacity, thanks to the technology applied in this CBR250RR engine. Another significant part in the layout of the power unit is Downdraft air intake. The air filter was removed from its usual position behind the cylinder and is now placed above the cylinder, the air intake has reduced resistance and provides optimal flow throughout the speed range. To offer optimal control in any situation, Honda has implemented the latest technology that is throttle-by-wire , known as TBW. The 2017 CBR250RR is the first model in its class to have a TBW system. This feature helps bring in a more precise feel when rolling on the throttle compared to its counterpart. The Accelerator Position Sensor APS detects and automatically sends electrical signals to the ECU. This system is also applied to the RC213V. The CBR250RR’s front face inherits the CBR series’ identity with its dual-LED headlights, enhancing its strong, fast and exciting image. The sharp wedge-shape leading from its low, long nose to its high, acute tail inspire awe in the eyes of the onlooker. The styling of this model adapted from the evolution of each function together with the latest technological development. Their design theme “Speed Shape” presents an attractive and functional appearance that gives a pleasurable riding experience before you’re even moving. Large 310mm diameter front and 240mm diameter rear wave discs provide outstanding stopping-power. The swing arm type is a gull-arm made of aluminum through the process of Gravity Dies Casting GDC which results in a reduction of the overall weight. It also helps with the exhaust layout to be closer to the center of gravity while still optimizing the tilt angle when maneuvering. The swinging arm connected with the main frame using Pro-Link suspension. The front suspension is an inverted fork from Showa with the size coming in at 37mm that helps reduce the un-sprung weight. 04 September 2016 / Text Size - + / Print Switchable engine maps headline Honda’s newest sportsbike Few bikes have been as poorly-kept secrets as Honda’s new CBR250RR but the firm has finally revealed the first official pictures and details of the new model. Featuring a fly-by-wire throttle, the new CBR250RR will be the first time a small-capacity bike in the entry-level segment can boast switchable engine maps. The modes, likely to be along the lines of normal, rain and sport will allow riders the ability to alter the power to the suit conditions. Initially to be sold only in Indonesia, with Japanese sales to follow, the bike is eventually expected to spawn a worldwide model with a larger, 350cc engine to take on rivals like the Yamaha R3 and Kawasaki Ninja 300, and the ability to reduce the output in wet or slippery conditions will likely be an attractive feature for new or learning riders. Apart from its internal engine dimensions, the worldwide version will be virtually identical to the CBR250RR you see here. If you think the shape looks familiar, that’s because Honda previewed the design with its Light Weight Super Sport concept, revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show last year. The styling, engine and chassis are basically identical, proving that the concept’ from last year was really little more than a bejewelled version of the production model. Of course, the concept bike’s carbon-fibre eye-candy is gone, replaced by textured plastics, and the production bike features lights – something that were notably missing from the concept. It also gets a more user-friendly pillion seat and an emissions-certified exhaust instead of the concept’s Akrapovič can. The tubular-steel frame is identical to the concept’s, as is the Gull Arm swingarm and the upside down fork, although the latter gains a gold coating that gives a high-end appearance. Don’t be fooled, though; this is budget suspension as befits a bike set to be an entry-level model in Honda’s sportsbike range. Adjustability is limited to preload, and only at the back. The engine is entirely new. Although Honda has confirmed it’s a DOHC, four-valve-per-cylinder parallel twin, there’s no word on more detailed specifications. Honda says, unsurprisingly, that it’s designed to offer class-leading performance, which suggests a power output that beats the 27kW of the Yamaha R25. Away from Indonesia, where the bike is due on sale before the end of this year, we’re expecting to see a big-bore version with a capacity of around 350cc. That will aim to beat the output of the 321cc Yamaha R3. It may also gain improved suspension specs, although Honda will still have a keen eye on the price point of the bike, so don’t expect miracles. Unique in its class is the LED headlight, which is believed to hint – along with the rest of the bike’s styling – at the appearance of the much-anticipated new CBR1000RR Fireblade that’s due to make its debut towards the end of this year.
